{"id":1801,"date":"2014-08-01T06:29:02","date_gmt":"2014-08-01T13:29:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coachingreallyworks.com\/?p=1801"},"modified":"2016-10-25T02:57:05","modified_gmt":"2016-10-25T09:57:05","slug":"4-self-care-areas-to-nurture-and-prevent-burnout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coachingreallyworks.com\/blog\/4-self-care-areas-to-nurture-and-prevent-burnout\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Self-Care Areas to Nurture and Prevent Burnout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>God forbid this should ever happen, but what would you do if you were traveling in a plane with a child and the oxygen masks dropped down in front of you?<\/p>\n<p>After years of hearing the flight attendants&#8217; admonitions, I would hope\u00a0you would strap one onto your head first and then proceed to help the child you&#8217;re with.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>It&#8217;s very difficult to be present for others, caring, giving, supporting, or providing for them in any way, \u00a0if you are not cared for yourself.<\/h3>\n<p>In our society self-sacrifice is often admired and people who do so are revered. Self-care on the other hand seems to be perceived as selfish or self-indulgent and the idea is frowned on. Self-care is not self-indulgent it&#8217;s essential for survival.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Self-care is not about self-indulgence, it is about self-preservation.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>Audre Lord<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One way of looking at self care is like a wheel with four equal parts. They are: mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual. If you were to print out the image below and fill it out rating each area of you life I can imagine if one area was an eight or a nine and then another one was a two or a three this would make for an uneven wheel and a &#8220;bumpy ride&#8221;.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/coachingreallyworks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/self-care.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1805 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/coachingreallyworks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/self-care.jpg\" alt=\"self care\" width=\"378\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/coachingreallyworks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/self-care-82x98.jpg 82w, https:\/\/coachingreallyworks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/self-care-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/coachingreallyworks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/self-care-333x400.jpg 333w, https:\/\/coachingreallyworks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/self-care.jpg 378w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Take a moment to think about these areas in your life and grade your level satisfaction in each of these four areas of self-care on a scale from one to ten. Here some ideas of things you can do to strengthen these four areas of your life today.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Mental self care is about keeping your mind strong and flexible.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Start or get back into a hobby.<\/li>\n<li>Learn a new skill, even one that is a little out of your comfort zone, to stretch your current capacity for talent.<\/li>\n<li>Read a great book, perhaps even an autobiography. It&#8217;s almost as good as having a coffee with the writer.<\/li>\n<li>Sign up for a workshop or a class that inspires or grabs your attention.<\/li>\n<li>Play board games that are mentally challenging with friends or family.<\/li>\n<li>Use <a title=\"The Control that Makes Your Goals Happen\" href=\"https:\/\/coachingreallyworks.com\/blog\/control-this-and-make-your-goals-happen\/\">affirmations or success statements to feed your subconscious mind<\/a> positive images and beliefs you want to make a part of your reality. Physical self care is about taking care of your body and increasing its potential life span.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Get enough <a title=\"Best Seller\u2019s Cure For My Thought Induced Insomnia. Emotional self care values your emotions and nourishes the positive and strengthening ones.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Open up to a friend an share your heart.<\/li>\n<li>Spend time with you partner or significant other, go out on a date.<\/li>\n<li>Say, &#8220;I love you&#8221;, &#8220;Thank you&#8221;, or &#8220;I&#8217;m proud of you&#8221; and be open about your feelings, especially the ones which will brighten up another persons&#8217;s day.<\/li>\n<li>Have a meetup with friends or work colleagues.<\/li>\n<li>Write in a journal or diary and take the time to connect with your thoughts and feelings.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Curious About Coaching? Spiritual self care is maintenance on that part of us that connects us to our higher self.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Go for a walk in nature or sit in your garden and admire the flowers and plants.<\/li>\n<li>Practice <a title=\"A Simple Introduction To How Meditation Works With a Rubik\u2019s Cube\" href=\"https:\/\/coachingreallyworks.com\/blog\/a-simple-introduction-to-how-meditation-works-with-a-rubiks-cube\/\">meditation<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Take time for <a title=\"The Magic of Thinking Big\" href=\"https:\/\/coachingreallyworks.com\/blog\/books\/the-magic-of-thinking-big\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">reflective\u00a0thinking on a daily basis<\/a>. This is good for the mind but it is especially helpful in allowing your spiritual side or your subconscious to connect with you. Work it into your schedule and life for 21 days in order form a new habit. Don&#8217;t try to do too much or you will get overwhelmed and discouraged.
