What are those ideas we call beliefs? Some time ago I thought the only context for them was religious or spiritual. I couldn’t have been more wrong. As it turns out, we are guided by them or held back by them all throughout our lives. What we choose to believe changes everything.

I still remember how years ago, as I started out in the world of coaching, I was amazed to discover the role my beliefs had played in how my life was turning out. There are two broad categories, limiting beliefs and empowering beliefs. The challenge is in learning to recognize them.

 You can choose to believe:

  1. you can’t.
  2. you have no choice what to believe.
  3. you need to accept the values of others above your own.
  4. it must be true because you believe it.
  5. some things are impossible.
  6. what you’ve been told.
  7. the world is a hostile place.
  8. you have no choice.
  9. you never change.
  10. your life will always be the same.
  11. others can have success, but it’s not for you.
  12. desire is shameful.
  13. if you could just get or do that one thing, you’d be happy.
  14. you’re stuck.
  15. there are limits and you need to accept them.

Or choose to:

  1. Believe you can.
  2. Believe it’s your choice what you believe.
  3. Believe your unique values count.
  4. Believe belief is simply something you’ve been told over and over again.
  5. Believe anything is possible.
  6. Believe it’s okay to question things.
  7. Believe the world can be what you need and desire.
  8. Believe you have a choice.
  9. Believe you change.
  10. Believe your life can change.
  11. Believe success is for you.
  12. Believe desire can be a healthy part of life.
  13. Believe happiness is an inside job to be chosen now.
  14. Believe you are resourceful.
  15. Believe you are only limited by what you believe.

You will believe something. Make your choice!
