When we I feel like a victim to circumstance or other people’s actions, I get a hopeless feeling in my gut.
“Why do things keep happening to me?” “They did it to me again.”
If “they” do something to you, the only way out of that mess is to get them to stop, right?
But that is kinda hopeless, because then something else happens and life seems to be one big string of things that happen to you.
There are three steps I know I can take to turn my situation around and they require me letting go of that “I’m-a-victim” mentality.
1. Stop playing the BLAME game.
It’s so easy to wallow in self pity and find fault in what “others did to us” or things that just “happened” to us. The problem with with blaming is that we are giving away our power to do anything about it.
2. Take RESPONSIBILITY for where you are in your life right now.
It’s simple, “Things did happen, but I chose how to respond to them and that is why I’m at this point in my life today.”
3. Take one step in the NEW DIRECTION you want your life to go.
Make it a positive action step. Find the first thing you can do something about and go after it with all your might and focus.
The habit will try to pull you back to your old victim thinking. When that happens, simply repeat the same three steps above.
As you get better at it you will find that you are no longer telling the story of a victim but you will be telling an amazing story of someone who MADE IT THROUGH adversity and came out STRONGER.
When things happen to you, hold tight to your right to CHOOSE YOUR REACTION and make a choice for yourself.
Then there will be no excuses.
