How accurate are all those stories you’ve heard about the mind healing the body and what is really going on? I was so glad to come across this video from Lissa Rankin, MD. She has been studying this aspect of health and has found some amazing evidence of our mind’s healing power.

While the mind does heal the body, we need others to aid it in the process.

I know the mind plays a similar role in our happiness, success, and resourcefulness throughout life.

Coaching can be an effective way of accessing this potential not all that different from a doctor helping us overcome and illness.

What I find most intriguing about what Dr. Rankin shared is the fact that while the mind does heal the body, we need others to aid it in the process of healing, be they care takers, physicians, or healers of some kind.

What about the ailments and health problems we allow in our lives and bodies because of our beliefs regarding health or our bodies? Or, how about the environment we are in or the people we are around? I’m not talking about contagions or sick people, but about the influence of the beliefs and views we are surrounded by and which influence our thoughts and beliefs even if on a subconscious level.

Some things that happen to us are outside of our immediate control. At the same time, I believe that the mind is the source of many the results and outcomes we experience in our lives including our health and physical well-being.

Often what we believe shapes our reality.

I can also see how some of these ideas relate to other aspects of our lives aside from health. I find the influence a coach can have on a person’s life and growth to be similar to the impact a healthcare provider can have on a patient.

  • In health: The mind holds the potential and ability to maintain the good health of the body and even cure ailments.
  • In relation to coaching: People are resourceful and posses the potential to achieve success in all aspects of their lives, including overcoming challenges or setbacks with resilience.
  • In health: Having the nurturing care of a healthcare provider can have an impact on the body’s ability to activate its healing ability.
  • In relation to coaching: The listening ear, curious mind, and supportive demeanor of a coach can help a client reach inside to find previously unnoticed solutions and resources.
  • In health: As well as having a “placebo” effect on a patient, a doctor can potentially have a “nocebo” effect which may actually affect a patient’s health negatively.
  • In relation to coaching: The skillful use of questions and conversation by a coach can lead a client to new discoveries and untapped solutions. Doing this well is the key to a client’s development.
