It happened. The unexpected came to pass and now you’re screwed. Really? Something happened. So what? Are you gonna go through door number one, door number two or door number three? As crazy at it may seem, you’ve simply been presented with choice.
Yes, those crazy things that come at us can be so frustrating. Problems may come from our boss or a relative, or even a complete stranger. Maybe there it’s just a failure or mistake on our part. In the end there’s nothing you or I can do about what happens.
This is the fascinating thing though, we always have a choice in how we react. Our mind is an incredible meaning machine.
Now, I’m gonna be a story-teller.
A farmer had a son who went out to the fields one morning and found a wild horse roaming the furrows. His neighbors congratulated him and told him how lucky he was that they had found such a magnificent animal. His reply, “Is that so?”
A few days later, as his son was breaking the horse in, he fell and broke his leg. “Oh what a terrible thing to have happen to your son, right at harvest time.” Again, “Is that so?” was the man’s only reply.
With the country being in a time of war, the military came through recruiting all able-bodied young men in the town, except the farmer’s son. Again the farmer’s only reply to his neighbor’s comments on his amazing luck, was “Is that so?”
The next time something happens and your tempted to get down over it, stop and think.
- What exactly happened? Just look at the facts without any attachment.
- Ask yourself, “How do I want to feel about this?” Yep, you have that choice at all times, even if someone just nabbed the biggest piece of pie.
- Clearly consider, “What options do I have given the new circumstances?”
- Don’t forget your mental state has a lot to do with the next few choices you are going to make and next thing life brings your way. Set yourself up to attract great things.
