Have you been told, “You have to give”? The religion I grew up with was very emphatic about it. You’ve probably heard it has to be a certain percentage of your income and that, if you don’t give, God will not bless you.
Sometimes those asking for your money or your time are not deserving of it. And there are those that definitely take unfair advantage of this, but at the same time you will find that the need to give or contribute in some way to others is a need you have deep inside. Today I want to share something that is a little bit more of a personal nature again, it is about giving.
I was watching a video recently from Hay House with Wayne Dyer. I am not sure if you are familiar with him, but he was sharing his experiences with giving to people in his life, a bank teller and someone who works in a laundry mat.
Why Does Giving Matter?
He shared an idea that is something that he is learning in his life, even as long as he’s been around, he is still growing and learning.
It was a truism in his life. And this truism is that basically, we need to be able to give, because giving is a part of who we are. It is a part of what we are.
It is a part of the everything that keeps us alive, that grows our fingernails, that keeps our heart beating in our chest, that gives us the life, and the thoughts, and the energy we have to be here and a part of this world.
What Do You Measure Against?
My personal story, happened a couple of weeks ago, with my peers, the social group that I am involved in.
It came to our attention that there was a child was in need. His family could not afford surgery to heal him from leukemia. He was in the hospital, and it was a very difficult situation.
That need really impressed me. I felt that I really wanted to give.
[shareable cite=”Abe Stone”]Giving is a part of what we are, it is a part of the everything that keeps us alive.[/shareable]So I went to the person making the collection and I put down the amount, I asked to be anonymous. I didn’t put down my name.
I didn’t want to be measured. I just wanted to give. I didn’t want to be measured against other people’s giving and I didn’t want to become a public thing.
So I put in my donation and I was really happy. It felt good to give to this child that needed help.
Then a few days later, one of my peers came to me and said, “Oh wow Abe, why did you give so much? We didn’t expect you to give so much.”
Apparently, the expectation was that I would give like a fifth of what I have given. I won’t get into details, because that’s not important.
But people were sort of doing that, they were measuring.
It seemed like it was coming away from that thing that you just have to do, because it’s coming from you. You want to give. You want to care for someone, you want to care for others.
You’ve probably heard a lot of other people talk about giving. You’re probably convinced about the idea of giving, so I know I don’t need to convince you of that here.
I do want to encourage you to just stay open. Continue just give, because it is going to come back to you. It is going to bless your life. It is an important part of your life. It is an important part of who you are.
What Human Need Phycology Has to Say
It has even been written up as being one of the essential that we have, the need to give.
Alongside the need to love and the need to grow, the need to contribute is very important to who we are what we are and it keeps that life energy flowing through us and alive in our communities.
Here is the quote for today.
[shareable cite=”Robert Brault”]The willingness to share does not make one charitable; it makes one free.[/shareable]The affirmation for today is:
