A friend of mine was being a wallflower because he couldn’t dance salsa. The truth is, he was taking lessons, had been for months, and did know how to dance. Clearly a struggling perfectionist who just needed to go for it anyway.

With a little encouragement, he was up on the dance floor doing the very thing he said he couldn’t. Perhaps little disjointed in his moves (don’t tell him I said that), but he was up there enjoying what he had been trying to get perfect, instead of waiting to be good at it before enjoying it. What are you trying to get just right?

Have you been wanting to do something for a long time?

Is there something that maybe you have been preparing for, you’ve wanted to learn, you wanted to understand it, you wanted to be able to take some steps of growth and you wanted to move forward in some direction?

  • Maybe it has something to do with launching out and starting a business.
  • Maybe you want to get married, you want to get settled down, but you haven’t been able to communicate that to the one that you love, to the one that you’re close to.
  • Or perhaps you’re in a situation where you know that you could do so much more but you’re just waiting to figure out the details before you take that step.

Now there’s nothing wrong with wanting to do the right thing, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to do it well and making sure that you’re understanding everything that you need to know before you get out.

Getting Things Right Could Lead to Failure

So many times we fail to take steps, we fail to grow, we fail to move forward because we’re waiting for things to be perfect, for the environment to be perfect, for us to have everything figured out, for us to have everything exactly in the right place, things lined up perfectly.

Have you heard the saying “Perfect is the enemy of good”? Well I will take it a step further, maybe this will help you to clarify exactly how that works.

Now you want to be done with something and you’re just waiting to get it just right. Well stop it. Stop it. Really, seriously, back off of the thing.

I want to tell you a couple of stories. One is on a smaller scale, it’s in my personal life, people that I have met and I have interacted with; another one is on a bigger scale.

And this first one, it’s very simple.

A School That Took the Leap Though the Books Weren’t Ready

There’s a company that I have been working with as an English teacher and they developed a whole curriculum of English books for children and they have been growing they have been developing schools now they have several, they have a high school, they have a foreign language school, they have kindergartens and their business is going really well; they figured out the whole system side of their business.

Now, as an inside teacher, there are some flaws in books, there are some flaws in the materials that we’re working with. And it’s been a little bit disappointing and I’ve allowed myself to get critical and frustrated.

But there’s one thing that I noticed, they’re doing really well, they’re changing a lot of lives, they’re helping a lot of children learn English really well and they are making a lot of money. Now I can sit there and nitpick at all these little details about, well, they didn’t quite present this well, or there is a typo here, of course in China there are going to be a lot more problems of this nature, but they are moving forward.

They are taking action on their dreams, they are connecting with people, they are changing lives and they are getting all the money that they need to live the life that they want, that they desire and they are living their dream.

Meanwhile other people are working for them and helping them fulfill their dream.

I’ve Taken a Cue from Those Who’ve Gone Before Me

Now I am moving out of that and moving into this business, with coaching and training and connecting you and other wonderful people to ideas that can help to improve their lives and to get them to take the action that they need to do in their lives, to move forward and live their dreams.

And I am not going to do it by waiting to get it perfect, I am going to do it by getting out there and giving you what you want and being here, being a part of the moving and the changing and the growing putting this together as I go.

Yes, I want quality, yes I want it to be able to answer your questions, but I’m not going to stop because I don’t have it perfect.

[shareable cite=”Abe Stone”]Yes, I want quality, but I’m not going to stop because I don’t have it perfect. #motivation #quote[/shareable]

You Could Make a Better Hamburger Than McDonald’s but Not This

There’s another good story that people like to use about McDonald’s. Actually, it’s not a story, but it’s a simple question; let me ask you this very simply, can you make a better hamburger than McDonald’s?

Chances are, you probably can, most of you watching most of you watching can at least get the basic ingredients together and you know, some pre-made things, cut up some vegetables, make a nice burger, put it in some better bread, than McDonald’s. It’s not hard to make something better than McDonald’s.

Actually, you don’t even have to be a cook to make a better burger than McDonald’s, in my opinion. And so many friends that I have talked to, they are like, “Yeah, yeah, I could do that.”

The thing is, can you sell as many burgers as McDonald’s?

Can you make a business as strong and as prosperous as McDonald’s?

Now I am not tooting any of McDonald’s virtues and I really don’t go for fast food, I personally don’t believe that it’s healthy for us, but the point is, they are not looking for perfect, they are looking for something else.

They are looking for businesses they are looking for expanding their capital and they use that; whatever ways, whatever decisions they do as a corporation, I don’t know, I am not interested in that, but the point is, as we waiting for perfect or are we willing to go forward because we are ready?

Now, I want to leave you with four simple steps that you can take to move forward into whatever it is that you want to do and whatever you want to do well enough to be doing it.

Not waiting, sitting on the sidelines watching other people do it and you’re just wishing you could. Okay, really, this is for you.

[shareable cite=”Abe Stone”]Quit waiting for perfection, sitting on the sidelines watching other people do it, while you’re just wishing you could. #motivation #quote[/shareable]

1. Go with good enough.

Okay? Not good, not perfect, good enough, alright?

Just get to good enough. That’s where you need to be.

[shareable cite=”Abe Stone”]Go with good enough. #motivation #quote[/shareable]

2. Shift your focus from perfection, to growth.

So, if you’ve got good enough, and you go with it, your focus is on growing that good and getting it better and better, so that you are already out there, you’re taking action, you’re involved with whatever it is; you’re moving into getting married to that wonderful person, or raising a family, or starting a business, or becoming an artist or, I don’t know, if it’s a hobby, whatever it is, you are involved, you’re learning as you go, but you’re in the game.

3. Stop protecting yourself from mistakes.

Okay? You are gonna make mistakes, be okay with it. Just accept it and stop putting up defenses that keep you from taking action and moving forward. You just got to get in there, you just got to take action, get your hands dirty, have fun doing it and do the thing you’ve been meaning to do.

4. Take one step, take one action step in the direction of your dream today, in the direction of your goal, today not tomorrow don’t plan it for tomorrow.

Before the sun goes down tonight, sit down and decide, this is one thing that I can do.

Maybe it’s a phone call, maybe it’s a very clear plan that you need to write. I don’t know. Whatever it is, but I’d like the action to be more than just a plan.

I’d like you to either go get the materials you need, I’d like you to pick up the phone, talk to the person make a commitment, whatever the case is, just move forward, take action today. Nothing is going to happen until you move.

How Do You Change the Direction of Boat?

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that the boat has to be in motion for the rudder to take effect. You’ve got a boat sitting there; it’s facing the wrong way, right. So what do you do?

That boat is just sitting there, can you turn the boat? You can’t turn the boat.

If you want to turn the boat because you need to go that way, you’ve got to start move the boat, then the rudder is going to move it, alright. Get in motion, get in action.

So what if you are not facing the right direction? You’ve got to get moving.

Okay well I went on a rant on that one, but, here is your quote for today, and I hope that it helps to kind of put that fire under you.

[shareable cite=”Rober tKiyosaki” text=”If you are the kind of person who is waiting for the right thing to happen, you might wait for a long time. #quote”]If you are the kind of person who is waiting for the right thing to happen, you might wait for a long time. It’s like waiting for all the traffic lights to be green for five miles before starting on the trip. #quote[/shareable]

Now here is your affirmation for today.

Remember,

  • grab that post- it
  • write it out
  • put it on your mirror, or just get a whiteboard marker, write it on your mirror
  • and look at it twice a day; maybe once when you wake up and once in the evening
  • say it three times each time:
