Life Balance Wheel
Today I want to talk to you about a special tool. It’s called the wheel of life.
It works like this.
You can look at the areas of your life like a wheel.
If you have a wheel and it is a nice even wheel, as you roll along it is a very smooth ride and your life can be like that, as long as all areas are in balance.
The areas that compose this wheel can be seen like spokes, they are all different lengths.
If you take these areas and you measure them on a scale of one to ten from the center you can see how if an area is at a ten, then that is great.
If all the other areas are 10 then that is great. You have a perfectly balance wheel. But when you have an area that is really shorter and not quite up to par you will be going along and see that suddenly there is a slump, and then there is a slump. Because something in your life is not exactly right, not working well.
The areas that we want to look at are these:
Career
We have our career life.
- You have your job.
- The directions you have in life.
- What you want to do.
- How you want to use your time.
- How you really want to work.
Money
Then you have Money. We all need money:
- To do the things we want to do.
- To take care of the people we want to take care of.
- To live the full life that we really want to live.
Health
Then there is health. If you don’t have your health, or if it is not in good condition, then it is going to be a rough ride
Friends and Family
Then we have friends and family. Friends and family are very important.
- They support us.
- They provide something that we need in terms of relationships and intimate bonds.
- We also need to be able to give to them.
- We need to care for our children.
- If our children are not doing well, the we are happy
- If they are not doing well, then it is a rough ride.
Significant Other/Romance
Then we have our significant other and romance.
- If you’re married, it is a spouse, your wife.
- If you’re not married, it could be a girlfriend or a boyfriend.
- Someone you are really close to or intimate with.
Personal Growth
Then we have personal growth. Personal growth is where:
- You are learning.
- You are studying.
- You are developing.
- You are learning and you are growing your mind.
- You are changing your habits.
- Developing new habits that are strengthening you.
- Letting go of habits that are not supporting your life, or in any way contributing to your growth.
Fun and Recreation
And then we have fun and recreation. Fun and recreation is one that is really easy to get into but then knowing how to keep that in balance is very important.
Some people will work a lot and they will be very busy they will pour out and give everything to their families but not really have time off for themselves to just relax and have a down time.
Psychical Environment
We also have a physical environment.
- The place that you live.
- Your home.
- Your work space.
- Whether you have enough space or not enough space.
- Is it in the right place or in a bad location in town?
A lot of things contribute to your personal environment
So there you have it. Those are the areas that you can look into today.
How To Do the Wheel of Life Exercise
I put the wheel of life balance down in the show notes below, so be sure to download that.
I would like to suggest that you print it out and take sometime to sit down for maybe 20 to 30 minutes and simply answer this question.
How satisfied am I in this area of my life?”
Then rate that wheel on a scale of one to ten. Go through all the areas on the wheel. Then once your done step back and have a look at that wheel and see how balanced that wheel is.
You will probably see that there are a couple of areas that maybe are a nine or ten and things are going really well, but then whoops, over here you’ve only got a five or four.
Then you can see as you are going through your day, if that wheel isn’t round and you don’t have the balance that you need in life, it’s going to be a pretty rough ride. You are going to hit lows on a regular basis.
What I would like to suggest for you to do today is ask a simple question.
After you are done with the wheel of life, sit down and look at the one that is lowest on the list and ask yourself:
What can I do in the next 24 hours? What is one action that I can take to improve this area of my life?”
And then commit to doing it.
The Wrap Up
Here is a fun quote on this topic:
Happiness is not a matter of intensity but a balance, order, rhythm and harmony”
Thomas Merton
And here is your affirmation for this week on this topic:
I create harmony in my life by maintaining a balanced lifestyle”
