Growing up, I was very intimidated by teachers who wouldn’t take no for an answer. Overcoming the impossible, one counselor got me to do my first pushups ever, when I was 15.

Over time I’ve learned to value the influence these people have had in my life. Now I’m more inclined to seek mentors out.

Hi there! I’m Abe Stone, a life design coach and this is Coaching Really Works.

Feeling Stuck

The other day I was stuck. I really wanted to do something, I had been trying, I had been showing up, I thought I was doing everything that I could, but I just wasn’t making progress, I wasn’t coming out, I wasn’t breaking through. But then, someone introduced me to someone who knew what I wanted to do. I started working with them and everything changed.

Okay, this is a hobby of mine. I love to dance. I have always loved dancing and recently my challenge has been to learn Salsa.

Salsa is a little bit confusing for me, it is not an even rhythm, or whatever my reasons are, why I wasn’t able to do it.

One evening I was dancing and a few of the ladies were being kind, they were taking time to show me everything but one lady said “Look, let me hook you up with a friend, he really loves teaching people to dance.” I said, “sure”, so we got in touch, we exchanged numbers and a week later I ended up going to some workshops that he was organizing just to get people started and introduce and make progress in Salsa.

Don’t Just Sit There

The thing is that the workshop is advanced level and I did not even sign up for it in the beginning. But he texted me and he said “Hey come on over and maybe you can learn something.” So I was like, “Okay, I will come.”

So I watched and the next step was, “Don’t just sit there. Come on, join us!” And he got me right up to do something and I got involved with Rueda where you dance with a partner and you do it all in a group dancing. I was like “Man, I have never done this.” I could hardly keep the beat.

Look For a Push In the Right Direction a.k.a. a Mentor

The thing about it is that, it was his pushing, his prodding, that got me to up my game. It got me to get serious about it. It got me to get really tune in and the amazing this is that when that happened, everything changed. The rhythm started to make sense and I was able to do a few move. Since then it has been constantly improving and changing.

Now, this is what I want to leave you with today.. Look for a mentor!

Find someone in whatever area you want to improve in, whatever area you are committed to growing in, pursuing your dream, or developing something.

Maybe you need a mentor in your relationship, because you are not doing well. Find someone who has the kind of relationship that you are looking for and get help from them. Get them to teach you, to give you advise, but not only to teach you but to push you and to challenge you.

If it is in your business and you are trying to start a specific type of business and you do not know how to do it, find someone in the business. Find someone who is accomplishing what you want to accomplish and engage their help and communicate with them. Go out for dinner. Talk to them about it. Tell them that you want their help.

Maybe it is just a hobby, maybe it is just something that you want to do for fun or something that is not really a big deal but you really want to get involved with it, like me with Salsa.

3 Ways a Mentor Brings Out the Best in You

Now, the thing about mentors is that mentors do several things:

  • They challenge us.
  • They push us past our comfort zones.
  • They have faith in us and confidence in us.

So my simple suggestion for you today is find a good mentor. Even a virtual mentor might be what you need.

But if you do find a virtual mentor, I would recommend someone that you actually engage financially. Buy their product, buy their instruction, so that you are motivated to do it.

When you work with someone face to face, you tend to do be motivated because they are there pushing you, prodding you along.

In a virtual environment, the money upfront will help you get some skin the game.

The reason for finding a mentor is simple – you want to grow, you want to move forward, and you want to elevate your game, you want good results. You want success.

Here is a quote for today:

Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen and a push in the right direction.”

John C. Crosby

The affirmation is:

I am able to attract the needed mentors into my life at the right times!”

I would like to hear from you.
