Have you been frustrated by people who have said, “That’s just your story.”? I didn’t really get that for a long time. My answer has always been, “Well that’s what really happened.”

That comment often comes up in a situation where there’s a problem, or difference of opinion with another person. But what about the story you’re telling yourself about who you are and what you are capable of? It really is just your story and it can be changed.

Hi! I’m Abe Stone, the life design coach and this is Coaching Really Works.

I am so glad that you are here. You are the reason that I make these videos and every time I try do one of these videos, I like to take the time to get behind the research and understand what it is that I am sharing with you, so that I know it’s something really valuable.

How You Keep Reliving Your Past by What You Say

Okay, this is taking off from the last post that I did on breakthroughs, were I explained a little bit of the concept Tony Robbins has built on over the years and the key aspects that are important to having breakthroughs. Go back and have a look at the video if you want see a quick rundown of all three of them.

[callout]Watch the Video: 3 Reasons Why You Are Not Experiencing Breakthroughs[/callout]

Today’s video is about story and how story is very important in our lives if want to be able to make a change and be able to experience the change and results that we are looking for in our lives.

When Do You Decide to Step off of the Curb and onto the Grass?

My eldest daughter, Julie, when she was really small, maybe about 2 years old, had an experience. I am not sure about what happened or when it happened, but apparently it caused her to be afraid of walking in the yard and stepping off the edge of the curb and onto the grass, so she’d walk along the sidewalk.

She loved to go down into the grass and play in the grass, look at the flowers, play ball, kick the ball around. The grass was a lot of fun but she would stay on the sidewalk because she believed that it was painful to go down into the grass, that she could’t make that leap.

She would walk right up to the edge, she would look down, she would try, she would be all frustrated. She would stand there frozen and just turn around, go back, and do something else.

So, I’d come along and I’d help her down or I’d hold her hand. The thing is that her belief kept her from being able to do that thing that she wanted to do. Eventually she turned that belief around just because she experienced that she could and she did it again and again.

She did it enough times that she had a new story. A story that said:

I can step off of this sidewalk and I can go play in the grass.”

What Have You Told Yourself Is Impossible For You?

That can be the same for you.

What are the areas in your life where you are saying things like:

  • “I can’t…”
  • “I am not this or that…”
  • “I never do this.”
  • “I never experience that…”
  • “I won’t…”
  • “I don’t do this.”
  • “I don’t do that.”

Now, pay attention to those things. In some cases, maybe there’s some truth there but more often than not those are things that are keeping us in a box, keeping us from living the full life that we want to live. Especially in an area where we are looking for a breakthrough. (Read Awaken the Giant Within)

How To Start Rewriting Your Story

So here are the ideas and ways that you can reframe those and words that you can use to put those things in a positive light.

[shareable]It’s not about lying to yourself. Find the things that are true in the direction that you want to go.[/shareable]

You can use words like:

  • “I can…”
  • “I do this.”
  • “I commit to doing this.”
  • “I am able to do this.”

Or simply:

  • “I am this.”
  • “I am that.”
  • “I am a happy person.”
  • “I am strong.”
  • “I am healthy.”

It is not about lying to yourself. It’s about writing a new story and letting that new story define your future rather than reliving your old past that has kept you in limitation.

Now here’s your quote along these lines.

If you believe you can, you probably can. If you believe you won’t, you most assuredly won’t. Belief is the ignition switch that gets you off the launching pad.”

Denis Waitley

And now for today’s affirmation:

Until I question my beliefs about my story, they are just someone else’s programming. Today I consciously choose my beliefs and my story.”

I hope this video was of help to you. And I hope that you found some insight and a way of rewriting your story and living the future and the dreams that you know you can.
