It happened again! Traffic is stuck, your frustrated and afraid you’re going to be late so you automatically turn down a small road to figure out a shortcut.
This kind of quick reaction can come in so many different situations; a conversation with a friend, parenting at home, or something breaks down. Are you usually driven by that first emotional response? How often do you pull back only to realize the solution is simpler than you thought.

Hi! Welcome to CoachingReallyWorks.com, my name is Abe Stone, I am the life design coach.
Today’s video training is going to be a little bit more geeky. It has to do with the mind, it has to do with our thought powers and how our brain works.
I’ve been reading a book. It is from Daniel Kahneman and the book is Think Fast and Slow. It has a very intriguing title and I got it recommended from another website, by somebody else that I am following. The insight that this book gives is quite amazing.
It is very academic, it has a lot of university studies, it quotes a lot of papers, and research but he does a really good job of tying it all together with stories and illustrations to help you understand it.
[shareable]Ask questions that really matter. @Abe_Stone[/shareable]Have Computers Made You This Depressed
Today, I want to give you a simple story.
Not long ago, actually quite recently, I was having computer trouble. It’s something that happens once in a while, we get frustrated and we just don’t know what to do. So the computer trouble happened right when I needed to get something done.
[shareable]What is your first reaction when something bad happens? @Abe_Stone[/shareable]My brain just got hit with all the “Man, I’m never gonna get this done, I am falling behind, I am not going to have a breakthrough. My computer is against me…” My emotions were all over the place. It was crazy. It was just not good.
That was my first reaction and then I stopped and I said “Wait a minute, where am I going with this? This is not helping me at all.” So, I pulled back.
Not only did I pull back but I remembered what he said in this book and I remembered, “Aaah! That is one of the systems. Okay. Now, where am I? What is happening? Forget those emotions? Thank you so much for the concern and everything but where am I? What so I need to do? What could I do? What are the possibilities? What does this really mean?”
Sure enough, I was able to research the problem, get down to the brass tacks, figure out what it was, make a change in my system and I was on the road again! My computer was working fine.
Now this is the secret of understanding the idea of how the mind works.
Think Fast and Slow
We have the fast brain. The fast brain reacts to things.
It’s like, when we are driving around the street. It’s responsible for that automatic reaction. When the red light come on on the car in front of you, you press the breaks, you don’t have to think, it just happens.
Even when you get into a conversation with a friend, it can drive you, navigate you through traffic, safely to your destination. Unless it’s a place that you’ve never been to before. Than you have to think. That is when the slow brain engages.
Very often, we go through life and we just let that fast thinking, engagement, and emotions sort of guide and control our life and we do not take the time to think and to ask the questions that really matter and are important, about the situation, about our lives, whatever the case may be.
Now I think the real secret here is learn to be able to recognize it, knowing that they exists and that they are a healthy part of our lives and then learning how to program them.
[shareable]You can even program your fast thinking. @Abe_Stone[/shareable]I have another post on programming your subconscious mind, and ways to access it the information and input that it needs.
Try This The Next Time Your Emotions Get The Better Of You
Now think about that, the next time that you are in a situation where your emotions start to take over and you start to go to automatic gear. Step back, observe those thoughts and access the really powerful resource that you have inside.
Take time to think, take time to really look through the situation, look through the experiences, look at possibilities, things you’ve read, things you’ve understood, even just to breathe, so the oxygen gets flowing to your brain and you’ll do much better at your thinking process. (Read The Magic of Thinking Big)
[shareable]Take time to think! @Abe_Stone[/shareable]Both systems are needed, both are useful, just learn how to engage them at the right time.
For now I have the quote for today:
The wise are instructed by reason, average minds by experience, the stupid by necessity and the brute by instinct.
Marcus Tullius Cicero
Okay instinct, I am not booing it, there is a lot of good in instinct but we have the ability to choose and to make our lives, not just to be driven by the programing that is inside.
The affirmation for today is:
[shareable]Each time I challenge a past habit, I feel a greater sense of control and self-esteem. #affirmation[/shareable]Challenge those past habits, build new ones. Check out my other post where I talk about building habits. I share this great coaching tool that you can use to build habits.
